Kalita Wave
The Kalita Wave is the most beloved flat-bottom dripper and the V60's natural counterpoint. Made by the Japanese brand Kalita, it trades the cone's demanding precision for evenness and forgiveness, producing a sweet, balanced, well-rounded cup with very little fuss. If the Hario V60 is a control instrument, the Wave is a safety net β which is why it is the dripper most often recommended to people who want great coffee without obsessing over their pour.

#Why the Design Works
The Wave's cleverness is that its ribs live on the filter, not the dripper. The wavy fluted paper holds itself off the wall, so the contact between filter and dripper is minimal and consistent regardless of how you seat it. The three small holes meter the flow so the dripper, not your pour, sets much of the rhythm β this is what makes it forgiving. And the flat bottom spreads coffee into a shallow, even bed, so water passes through a uniform depth everywhere and extracts evenly. The result is a cup that emphasizes sweetness and body over piercing acidity.
Because the holes and flat bed regulate flow, sloppy pouring hurts the Wave far less than the V60. Even a single steady center pour brews a good cup. It is an excellent first "serious" dripper.
The Wave's wavy filters are not interchangeable with cone filters, and generic substitutes seat poorly. The 155 (1β2 cup) and 185 (2β4 cup) sizes match the corresponding drippers. The filter is part of the brewing mechanism here β see Coffee Filters β Paper, Metal, and Cloth.
#Recipes That Pair With It
Start with the Kalita Wave Official Recipe. The Wave also suits flat-bottom-friendly approaches and pairs naturally with the even, sweet extractions targeted by many community recipes. Its forgiving nature makes it a fine platform for learning the brew ratio before moving to a cone.
