Hario V60
The Hario V60 is the most iconic pour over dripper in the world β the brewer that, more than any other, defines the modern image of manual coffee. Launched by Japanese glassware maker Hario in 2004, its name comes from its shape: a V-shaped cone at a 60-degree angle. It is a pure percolation brewer that hands almost all control to the user, rewarding skill with extraordinary clarity. For its history see Hario and the V60; here we cover the hardware.

#Why the Design Works
Three features make the V60 a control instrument. The single large hole means the dripper itself barely restricts flow β the coffee bed and your pour set the speed, so a finer grind or a slower pour directly lengthens contact time. The spiral ribs hold the filter off the wall and curve, encouraging air to escape and water to drain freely down the whole cone. The steep 60Β° cone funnels coffee into a deep central column, concentrating extraction at the point where the brewer's pour has the most leverage.
Because nothing restricts the flow for you, the V60 magnifies both good and bad pouring. It is the most expressive dripper and the least forgiving β which is exactly why it dominates competition and obsessive home brewing.
#Sizes 01 / 02 / 03
- 01 β single cup (~1β2 cups), small dose.
- 02 β the standard; brews 1β4 cups and the default for most recipes. Buy this one first.
- 03 β large batch, up to ~6 cups; needs a confident, high pour rate.
Filters are size-specific β an 02 filter does not fit an 01 cone β so match your paper to your dripper.
#Recipes That Pair With It
The V60 has more documented recipes than any other brewer. Start with the Hario V60 Official Recipe, then explore The Standard V60 Recipe, the James Hoffmann V60 Technique, the Tetsu Kasuya 4:6 Method, the Lance Hedrick Pour Over Technique, and the Onyx Coffee Lab V60 Recipe. The V60 also forms half of the Hario Switch hybrid.
The V60 excels at clarity but is unforgiving. Many drinkers prefer the sweeter, easier Kalita Wave. Best means best for you.
