The Clever Dripper solves immersion's one inconvenience with a clever valve: a silicone stopper in the base that stays shut until you set the dripper on a cup, which opens it and drains the brew through a paper filter. So you get the full-immersion sweetness and near-foolproof consistency of a French Press, but the clean cup of a paper filter. It's the most forgiving brewer in the book. βœ…

#Pour Schedule

  1. Setup β€” Rinse a paper filter in the closed Clever (off the cup so the valve stays shut). Add 18 g coffee.
  2. 0:00 β€” Pour 40 g (cumulative 40 g) and stir gently; bloom 30 s.
  3. 0:30 β€” Pour to 290 g (cumulative 290 g); give one gentle stir to wet all grounds.
  4. 0:30-3:30 β€” Steep undisturbed (lid on to hold heat).
  5. ~3:30 β€” Optional gentle stir, then place on the mug to open the valve and drain (~30-45 s).

#Why It Works

Because the coffee steeps fully submerged, extraction is even and time-driven rather than pour-driven β€” there is no pour technique to master and almost no channeling to worry about. That makes the Clever ideal for beginners, for batch-testing beans, and for tea-like delicate coffees. Total steep time is your main lever: shorter for a brighter, lighter cup, longer for more body and sweetness, with grind as the secondary adjustment. Keep the lid on to protect temperature during the steep.

The Clever sits at the heart of the immersion family and pairs naturally with the switch-valve The Hario Switch Hybrid Method, which adds percolation pours on top of the same idea. The bloom is optional and the exact steep time is approximate β€” many brewers simply pour all the water at once and steep 4 minutes.
