Flat Bottom Drippers β April and Orea
While the Kalita Wave defined the classic flat bottom, a new generation of fast-flowing flat brewers has emerged from the specialty scene β led by the Danish roaster April and the British-designed Orea. These drippers keep the flat bed's even, sweet extraction but pair it with very high flow rates and standard flat-bottom filters, giving the modern competitor the best of both worlds. They represent the contemporary flat scene that has quietly taken over many cafΓ© bars.
#The Two Flagships
The April Brewer (from April Coffee Roasters in Copenhagen) is a tall, steep-walled flat dripper prized for clarity-with-sweetness. The Orea Brewer (V3/V4) uses a near-flat base with a wide-open bottom and minimal restriction for extremely fast, controllable flow.

#Why Fast Flow Matters
Older flat drippers like the Wave deliberately restrict flow with small holes. The modern approach instead removes restriction and lets the grind and pour govern speed β the same philosophy as the Hario V60, applied to a flat bed. Faster flow lets brewers use a finer grind and more agitation to raise extraction without over-steeping, chasing high extraction and high clarity at once. This is why these brewers feature in cutting-edge competition routines.
Fast flat brewers expose grind quality. With a uniform grind (see Particle Distribution and Uniformity) they produce remarkably sweet, layered cups; with a poor grinder they can run thin. Pair them with a capable burr grinder.
The flat-fast category is fashionable, and marketing claims of dramatically "higher extraction" should be read with caution. They make excellent coffee β but a well-dialed Kalita Wave or Hario V60 is not far behind. Buy for the workflow you enjoy.
