Specialty and Experimental IPAs
Beyond the named, codified styles lies the IPA family's long tail — a continuous frontier of one-off, hybrid, and novelty beers that brewers invent faster than guidelines can catalog them. This note maps that frontier: the restless experimentation that has kept the IPA the most dynamic style in craft beer.
Loosely, any hop-forward beer that does not fit a recognized style box. Several beers once "experimental" — the Milkshake IPA, the Cold IPA, the Brut IPA — graduated into named styles. Today's novelty is tomorrow's sub-style. See Modern IPA Diversification.

Most experimental IPAs vary one of four levers away from the American IPA:

#Why the IPA Keeps Mutating

#A Word of Caution
