The Session IPA is the IPA scaled down β€” a sub-5% ABV beer that keeps the hop-forward aroma and flavor of an American IPA while shedding the alcohol and weight. The word "session" refers to a long drinking session: a beer light enough to enjoy several of without fatigue. It is the mirror image of the Double IPA.

#Origins

The Session IPA rose to prominence in the early 2010s as a counterweight to the imperial escalation of the Double IPA era. Founders All Day IPA is the most-cited landmark. It answered a real demand: drinkers wanted hop character without a high-ABV commitment.

#The Brewing Challenge

A low-ABV beer offers the brewer very little to work with. The difficulty is keeping a Session IPA from tasting thin, watery, or harshly bitter:

  • Body β€” small additions of wheat, oats, or dextrin malt add mouthfeel; see Base Malts and The Science of Mouthfeel.
  • Bitterness balance β€” with little malt sweetness, aggressive bittering turns coarse. Brewers shift hops to whirlpool and dry hop additions for flavor over raw IBU.
  • Aroma retention β€” the goal is maximum hop aroma per unit of alcohol.
✦Session IPA vs. Pale Ale

The line is blurry. A Session IPA generally hops harder and finishes drier than an American pale ale of the same strength, leaning aroma-forward rather than balanced.
