Iconic IPAs That Defined the Style
Some beers are not merely good β they are turning points. This note collects the IPAs that changed what the style could be: beers worth knowing about as a matter of beer literacy, whether or not you ever get to taste them.
These picks are chosen on the Influence criterion from How These Were Selected. Several have been surpassed in pure quality by modern rivals β but each one moved the style forward, and that is what earns the word "iconic."

#How each one moved the style
Liberty Ale is the hinge of the whole story. Brewed by Anchor to mark Paul Revere's ride, it was the first modern beer to be dry-hopped with American Cascade β the moment told in Anchor Liberty Ale and the First Modern IPA. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale then proved a hop-forward beer could sell at scale, anchoring the The American Craft Beer Revolution. Ballantine IPA is the elder statesman β a genuine link to IPA in Early America and the pre-craft era. 60 Minute IPA made the IPA an everyday beer. Pliny the Elder crystallized the Origins of the Double IPA. Heady Topper triggered The New England IPA Emergence. Punk IPA drove the Globalization of IPA.
Read top to bottom, the table is the modern history of the IPA β from a bicentennial ale in San Francisco to a hazy can in Vermont. The fuller narrative lives in History of IPAs and the Timeline of IPA History.
Several of these are still brewed and still excellent. Drinking Liberty Ale or 60 Minute fresh is a direct line to the moments that built the style β see Landmark IPA Breweries.
