Anchor Liberty Ale and the First Modern IPA

If the modern IPA has a single point of origin, most historians place it in 1975, in San Francisco, with one beer: Anchor Liberty Ale. It was not labelled an "IPA" β€” but it established the template that every American IPA has followed since.

#The Beer

Liberty Ale was brewed by Anchor Brewing under Fritz Maytag to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Paul Revere's ride (1775 β†’ 1975). It was a pale, assertive ale that did two things almost no contemporary American beer was doing:

Cascade, released by the USDA breeding program in 1972, gave American brewers a hop unlike anything English. Liberty Ale was its showcase. The grapefruit-and-pine signature of the American IPA β€” see Hop Oils and Terpenes β€” effectively begins here.

#Why "the First Modern IPA"?

Liberty Ale was sold simply as "ale." The term "IPA" was attached later, retrospectively. But in its construction, it is unmistakably the prototype:

  • Pale, lean malt base built as a stage for hops.
  • Aggressive American hop flavor and aroma.
  • Dry Hopping used deliberately for aroma intensity.

Every defining trait of the American IPA is present. What changed afterward was degree β€” more hops, more bitterness, higher strength β€” not concept.

β—†Prototype, not a fully formed style

Liberty Ale is the missing link: more hop-forward than an English pale ale, less extreme than a 1990s West Coast IPA. It is to the IPA roughly what an early ancestor is to a modern species β€” recognisably the same lineage, visibly earlier on the branch.

#The Dry-Hopping Revival

Dry Hopping β€” adding hops after the boil for aroma without bitterness β€” was an old English keeping-ale practice that had largely fallen out of American use. Anchor's deliberate dry hopping of Liberty Ale reintroduced the technique to American craft brewing. It is now utterly central to the IPA, from the West Coast IPA to the double-dry-hopped New England IPA.

#Legacy

Liberty Ale demonstrated three things that the entire craft IPA movement would build on:

  1. A single, characterful American hop could define a beer.
  2. Aroma β€” not just bitterness β€” was worth chasing.
  3. American drinkers would embrace an intensely hoppy beer.
