Europe both invented the IPA and, much later, re-imported it. Today the continent hosts a distinctive scene β€” part heritage, part American-influenced craft, part Nordic experimentalism. This note maps Europe's IPA regions with a flagship pick for each.

β„ΉTwo lineages on one continent

European IPA splits into a heritage line (the surviving English IPA tradition) and a craft revival line, sparked when American craft crossed the Atlantic. Picks follow How These Were Selected.

England is the historic homeland β€” see Burton-on-Trent and Burton Pale Ale and IPA in the British Empire β€” and still brews characterful traditional IPAs. Scotland's BrewDog did more than anyone to put modern hop-forward IPA on UK shelves. Scandinavia punches far above its size: Denmark and Sweden's "gypsy" brewers (brewing at host facilities) made the region a lab for experimental and specialty IPAs. Germany, long bound by purity traditions, now embraces craft IPA and the India Pale Lager. Italy has a small but acclaimed scene known for elegance and balance.

✦Germany's purity law and the IPA

The Reinheitsgebot shaped German brewing for centuries. Modern German craft brewers work around or outside it β€” context for why the India Pale Lager feels natural there. See Globalization of IPA.

β—†The round trip

The IPA sailed from Britain, nearly died there in the Decline of IPA in Britain, was reinvented in America, and then sailed back to a Europe that embraced it anew. Few styles have such a circular history β€” see History of IPAs.
