Europe both invented the IPA and, much later, re-imported it. Today the continent hosts a distinctive scene — part heritage, part American-influenced craft, part Nordic experimentalism. This note maps Europe's IPA regions with a flagship pick for each.
European IPA splits into a heritage line (the surviving English IPA tradition) and a craft revival line, sparked when American craft crossed the Atlantic. Picks follow How These Were Selected.

#Reading the map
England is the historic homeland — see Burton-on-Trent and Burton Pale Ale and IPA in the British Empire — and still brews characterful traditional IPAs. Scotland's BrewDog did more than anyone to put modern hop-forward IPA on UK shelves. Scandinavia punches far above its size: Denmark and Sweden's "gypsy" brewers (brewing at host facilities) made the region a lab for experimental and specialty IPAs. Germany, long bound by purity traditions, now embraces craft IPA and the India Pale Lager. Italy has a small but acclaimed scene known for elegance and balance.
