The PM Wheel

Petra Wille's PM Wheel (from Strong Product People) is a self-assessment radar that maps eight product-management skills around a circle, scored 0 to 7 each, so you can see the shape of your competence at a glance. I like it because it's deliberately a coaching tool, not a grading tool. Its whole reason for existing is to start a good career conversation, not to produce a number for a promotion packet.

Understand the problem: discovery, user and market insight, framing what's actually worth solving. Find a solution: ideation, design judgment, separating good answers from clever ones. Do some planning: prioritization, roadmapping, sequencing. Get it done!: execution, delivery, shipping. Listen & learn: feedback loops, measurement, iterating on evidence. Team: collaboration, working through and with the people around you. Grow!: self-development, learning, deliberately getting better. Agile: fluency with iterative ways of working.

You rate each, plot the points, and connect them. The output is a shape, and the shape is the message.

#What the shape tells you

✦You're looking for spikes and gaps, not a big circle

The instinct is to want a perfectly round, maxed-out wheel. That's the wrong goal. Great PMs are spiky, not uniformly excellent. They're exceptional at a few things and adequate at the rest, and great products come from spiky people on well-rounded teams (see The T-Shaped PM and Knowing Your Shape). The wheel's value is making your spikes and your genuine gaps visible so you can decide, deliberately, which to lean into and which to shore up or staff around.

A round wheel scored at 4 across the board isn't better than a spiky one. It often means either a generalist with no superpower or someone who hasn't self-assessed honestly. The diagnostic question isn't "is it round?" It's "is the shape intentional, and does it fit the role I'm in?"

#How it fits the rest of the Atlas

The PM Wheel is one of three lenses on the same underlying skill set. The Atlas's own competency model is the rigorous, leveled version: four pillars, twelve competencies, behaviors mapped to a ladder. Petra Wille's wheel is the lightweight, self-directed counterpart: faster, friendlier, better for a quarterly self-check or a coaching chat. I use the formal model for calibration and the wheel for spotting where to grow next. They don't compete; they operate at different ceremonies.

β–²Don't let a self-assessment masquerade as an evaluation

The wheel is self-scored, which makes it honest fuel for reflection and a terrible instrument for promotion decisions. People rate themselves inconsistently: some sandbag, some inflate. The moment you try to compare two people's wheels or gate a level on a wheel score, you've broken the tool. Keep it as a mirror, not a measuring stick. For that, see The Competency Self-Assessment and The Proficiency Scale.
